Chris dropped to his knees next to her unmoving body. He bent his head down to her chest to check her breathing. Very shallow. He quickly picked her up and ran outside. He spotted her car and sprinted to its side. He gently put her in the passenger seat and then got into the car himself and floored in back to the school. He was back within minutes and carried her as he ran to the hospital. Again. He called to the nurse and softly laid her down onto the closest bed. The nurse took over and all he could do was wait. The nurse tried to get him to leave but he wouldn't let maria out of his site. So he waited. And waited. And waited. Around 4:45am he sat down and fell asleep in the chair next to her bed and all he think was It happened again! Because of me! I can't take this! She can't get hurt because of me! He had nightmares about, but he wouldn't wake up. They wouldn't let him.

Maria opened her eyes, slowly but surely. She was in a room, a small white room, which was very white and blinding. Everything looked foggy, and sound was muffled and distorted. She had to concentrate to keep her eyes open, and she couldn't move her head to look to the sides. Ow! Her head killed. It felt like someone just hit her with a baseball bat as hard as they could until all her blood had leaked out.
Speaking of blood, she did feel extremely lightheaded. She had once had 16 tubes of blood taken when she was 13, because she was thought to have a type of cancer but was found to be clear. She felt like her body was deflated then, but nothing like this. She felt like every movement would take all her strength.
She looked around, trying to focus on the sights around her. She was in a small white bed, with tubes and needles and bandages all over her. Her right arm was covered with dried up blood, and she was glad she didn't have to see her head or her legs. Her left arm... She looked to her left. Where was her arm? All she saw was something grouse and mangled, bent in wrong directions. It couldn't be her arm. Her denial scared her even more.
She looked at the thing. She could feel it, painfully, but she didn't want to believe it. She forced herself with all her might to lift it... She screamed in pain. She cried, tears running down her blood stained cheeks and soaking her pillow. She flickered in and out of consciousness, breathing heavily as she screamed in pain. She couldn't keep her eyes open anymore, it took too much effort. Did someone just call her name? Everything was messy and blurry and not understandable. She was dying.

Chris was jerked waake when he a sudden scream. It was Maria. She had tried to move her bad arm. He jumped up. "No! Don't move!" He lifted his head. "Nurse!" At his command the nurse came rushing in and began to take care of her patient again. "He turned back to Maria and spoke very quietly. "Just..." He let out a quick, worried sigh. "Don't move. Not now." He closed his eyes for a long moment. When he opened them again he said, "You're going to be fine..... I promise." He looked at her with his eyes filled with love. This time he didn't think she'd even heard him, he was so quiet. "I promise..."

Maria opened her eyes, sure an angel was speaking to her. All she saw was Chris, and she smiled in happiness. I am in Heaven... She whispered in a daze. Everything was oblivious to her, and all that mattered was Chris.

Chris looked over the nurse's shoulder as she worked. "No." He couldn't keep a slight giggle from coming out. " No you're not. You're still alive. And you're going to stay that way." A single tear rolled off of Chris's cheek, but he was still smiling because she was alive.

Maria stared at him, confused. Was he real? She tried to lift up her head, to look at him more clearly. She was snapped from her daze when an excruciating pain went up her neck and up her head, and she screamed again, shaking violently and painfully. Every time she screamed, it hurt even more, but every stab of pain made her scream.

Chris watched helplessly as the nurse did her job. He stepped forward but the nurse pushed him back. When he refused to go back at all, she called the security and had him removed from the hospital after she said "She'll be fine, but your just getting in the way. She'll be up and around in maybe a month, a month and a half." Chris couldn't get lose from the grasp of the security no matter how hard he tried. he was out of the hospital in a minute and a few tears found their way down his cheek. With nothing else to do, he went back to his room where Michael was doing homework. His brother looked up from his work and stood straight up. "Wha-" Chris cut him off. " Not now!" He laid down in his bed and Mike reluctantly sat back down to his work. Chris fell asleep with images running through his head of Maria, the first time she got hurt, how he broke her heart, then the fight, and now she was hurt again. He just couldn't win. ~THE END~
